Unit aim

Provides students with detailed insight into dealing with hazardous and complex wastes and leachates. Innovative and practical approaches to treating, storing, and managing waste in various compartments of the environment will be explored. Case studies from mining, medical industries, agriculture and industrial processing will be used to highlight challenges in managing hazardous waste and identify solutions to reduce impacts on the environment.

Unit content

Creation of hazardous wastes and leachates

Hazardous waste and leachate characterisation

Hazardous waste producers

Waste storage and leachate containment

Identifying toxicity and waste detoxification

Dealing with storage failure

Strategies to mitigate hazardous waste

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
