Unit aim
Explores the development of human function across the lifespan with a particular focus on the influence of physical activity and exercise through teacher-directed activities and problem-based learning.
Unit content
- Definitions and theories of human development.
- Pregnancy, pre and postnatal and infant development. Maternal changes during pregnancy.
- Early and middle childhood and adolescence: influences on individual development.
- Life-stage challenges of adolescence and young adulthood.
- Use it or lose it: changes during early and middle adulthood.
- The role of physical activity and exercise in the promotion of mental and physical health in people with congenital and acquired disabilities.
- Late adulthood: theories of ageing and healthy ageing.
- Late adulthood: individual differences and the role of physical activity related to age and pathology.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | define the stages in human development and explain major theories | |||||||
2 | explain the significance of appropriate exercise, key nutrients and environmental risks for maternal, foetal and infant health | |||||||
3 | review changes in major systems from early childhood through adolescence and consider physical activity levels, training regimes and injury risks | |||||||
4 | evaluate the neurological development in adolescents and young adults in relation to challenges common to this life-stage | |||||||
5 | review changes during early, middle and late adulthood and consider health in relation to physical activity, diet and training | |||||||
6 | outline developmental issues associated with congenital and acquired disabilities and analyse evidence associated with physical activity and exercise in mitigating functional decline | |||||||
7 | identify different types of research studies investigating the effect of exercise, physical activity and lifestyle choices on developmental outcomes. |
