Unit aim

Focuses on concepts of biomechanics and kinesiology applied to situations that have specific implications for occupational therapy practice and intervention in activities of daily living and the workplace. The emphasis is on biomechanical concepts and the application of those concepts to certain tissues and specific regions, including the trunk and upper limb. The effect of common work tasks will also be explored.

Unit content

  • Linear Kinematics – Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration
  • Forces – Inertia, Friction, Gravity, Muscular, Reaction – Stability, Free Body Diagrams, Centre of Mass
  • Rotational kinematics and dynamics – Absolute and relative angles – Torques, levers and pulleys
  • Tissue mechanics – Muscle's ability to produce tension – Cartilage, bone, tendon & ligament mechanics
  • Factors affecting balance and stability
  • Functional anatomy of the neck, trunk and upper limb
