Unit aim
Focuses on concepts of biomechanics and kinesiology applied to situations that have specific implications for occupational therapy practice and intervention in activities of daily living and the workplace. The emphasis is on biomechanical concepts and the application of those concepts to certain tissues and specific regions, including the trunk and upper limb. The effect of common work tasks will also be explored.
Unit content
Topic 1: Linear Kinematics - Displacement, Velocity and Acceleration
Topic 2: Forces - Inertia, Friction, Gravity, Muscular, Reaction - Stability, Free Body Diagrams, Centre of Mass
Topic 3: Rotational kinematics and dynamics - Absolute and relative angles - Torques, levers and pulleys
Topic 4: Tissue mechanics - Muscle's ability to produce tension - Cartilage, bone, tendon & ligament mechanics
Topic 5: Factors affecting balance and stability
Topic 6: Functional anatomy of the neck, trunk and upper limb
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
