Unit aim

Provides the student with the opportunity to apply the principles and objectives of an effective exercise assessment program. Program design is studied in detail in relation to different populations. Aspects of consultation, interview and testing techniques, health education and counselling will be studied with an emphasis on developing practical skills.

Unit content

Topic 1: General principles of exercise testing and screening
Topic 2: General principles of exercise prescription and programming
Topic 3: Selecting and implementing appropriate fitness and exercise tests.
Topic 4: Designing exercise programs for healthy individuals
Topic 5: Conducting and evaluating training programs and outcomes

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

1 demonstrate competency of, and apply, their knowledge of exercise testing to healthy and low risk individuals, showing an understanding of the principles and objectives of exercise testing and exercise prescription
2 assess exercise testing protocols and determine their appropriateness for apparently healthy populations
3 design effective exercise training programs for a range of applications within the apparently healthy population group
4 conduct and supervise a prescribed exercise program for an apparently healthy population.
