Unit aim

Provides detailed study of the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems in relation to their functions in human movement. Develops knowledge that is essential to the understanding of how the forces that are produced by muscle contraction are used to produce movement and how these forces are used with maximum efficiency for everyday living motor skills and for rehabilitation.

Unit content

Topic 1 Material properties of biological tissues
Topic 2 Mechanics of joint function, tendons and ligaments
Topic 3 Biomechanics of skeletal muscle
Topic 4 The shoulder complex
Topic 5 The elbow, forearm and hand
Topic 6 The head and spine
Topic 7 Core stability
Topic 8 The pelvis and hip
Topic 9 The knee
Topic 10 The ankle and foot
Topic 11 Posture

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to: GA1 GA2 GA3 GA4 GA5 GA6 GA7
1 demonstrate an understanding of the general mechanical properties of biological tissues and apply this knowledge to the mechanical properties of bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and muscle
2 understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system in relation to human movement
3 demonstrate a detailed knowledge of muscle actions and synergies in human movement
4 show an ability to analyse movement at specific joints from kinesiological principles
5 determine the structural and functional parameters associated with posture and core stability
6 demonstrate an understanding of the structural factors associated with musculoskeletal and joint injury.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
