Unit aim
Introduces students to physical laws and the application of these laws to the mechanics of motion, with emphasis on human motion.
Unit content
This unit will cover: Relevant aspects of the academic skill of numeracy; Describing motion using linear and angular kinematics; Linear and angular kinetics — gravity, inertia, forces and torques; Balance, stability and equilibrium; Machines and free body diagrams; Energy, work and power; Linear and angular momentum, impulse, impacts and collisions; fluid dynamics — aero- and hydrodynamics.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Demonstrate competency in understanding and applying the academic skill of numeracy in relevant mathematical operations. | |||||||
2 | Describe, explain and apply concepts related to kinematics, kinetics, balance and machines. | |||||||
3 | Integrate and apply concepts related to kinematics, kinetics, balance and machines to examples of human motion. | |||||||
4 | Describe, explain and apply concepts related to work, energy, momentum, impulse and fluid dynamics. | |||||||
5 | Integrate and apply biomechanical concepts as a whole to examples of human motion. |
