Unit aim

Extends the students’ understanding of the relationship between psychological theory and practice through a combination of invited professional speakers, self-directed research and collaborative sharing of knowledge. Students will gain further understanding of ethical principles involved in research practice through structured participation in research being conducted within the School of Psychology.

Unit content

This unit will involve a number of educational experiences designed to meet its aims and objectives:

Guest speakers from professional practice:

A series of guest speakers will present to the students, and be available for Q&A sessions relating to their professional activities. 'Debriefing' sessions will allow students and staff to discuss issues raised by consideration of this material.

Psychology career project:

Students will develop their knowledge of particular psychological careers through a project in which they research the formal and informal requirements for participation in some specified career, describe the employment opportunities available, and discuss the relationship between that career and the scientific basis of psychology.

E-Conference:

Students will share the information developed in the career project with the rest of the group through an electronic conference. Each student will prepare a single-slide PowerPoint poster which will be displayed in an electronic poster session within Blackboard. Students will give a brief (2 minute) oral presentation regarding their material.
