Unit aim

Introduces the practical aspects of making small 3D printed objects in a workshop, embracing workshop practices, modelling techniques and using manual or semi-automated tools. Students undertake programmed exercises in model making including three-dimensional form development, and gain an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of modelling materials and laser cutting.

Unit content

  • Understanding basic software for design fabrication
  • Design, scanning, printing, cutting
  • Component design
  • Production methods

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a knowledge of the range of modelling types and their applications
2 develop skills to be able to produce simple models of objects in the workshop
3 demonstrate understanding of occupational health and safety policy requirements of the model making workshop environment and be able to demonstrate safe working practices on a selected range of equipment
4 demonstrate understanding of basic fabrication in 3d printing and laser cutting.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. demonstrate a knowledge of the range of modelling types and their applications
  2. develop skills to be able to produce simple models of objects in the workshop
  3. demonstrate understanding of occupational health and safety policy requirements of the model making workshop environment and be able to demonstrate safe working practices on a selected range of equipment
  4. demonstrate understanding of basic fabrication in 3d printing and laser cutting.
