Unit aim

Investigating the technical foundations of Printmaking, this unit considers the role of printing as an historically rich artistic form in relation to other art forms and as a contemporary medium of art practice. The unit provides students with an in-depth introduction to hands-on skill development in a variety of printing processes with an emphasis on types of printing, paper supports, grounds, inks, colour, mediums, and a consideration of their works in the context of contemporary visual art.

  • Relief, Intaglio, and Screen Printing will be investigated
  • Understand print editions and artist proofs and monoprints
  • Support structures for printing
  • Technical competence with different techniques

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas
2 design and produce artworks using basic printmaking techniques as a special means of creative and critical expression, with particular reference to etching and relief printing
3 demonstrate understanding of the context of printmaking in the national and global field of contemporary art culture
4 articulate the theoretical, conceptual and historical rationale of their work
5 demonstrate an understanding of the differing methodologies to printing mediums, support, representations
6 apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the discipline practice

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
