Unit aim

Introduces basic materials and routines relating to a chosen studio area. Fundamental skills and media manipulation, equipment usage and occupational health and safety issues are addressed. Underlying conceptual concerns and critical thinking are addressed.

Unit content

The unit introduces students to studio routines and procedures in two different studio areas. Building on ART00621, students will undertake 2 x 6 weeks of study of a studio discipline each session, reflecting on:

  • Technical, conceptual and theoretical frameworks
  • Studio skills and techniques and equipment usage
  • Media investigations and applications
  • Composition and design strategies
  • Visual arts research strategies
  • Journal keeping
  • Professional language and terminology
  • Critical analysis in visual arts practice
  • Health and safety issues
