Unit aim
Introduces students to the art-historical debates that are central to modern visual culture. The onset of modernity enacted radical changes in the production and interpretation of the visual arts. Students will explore the reasons for, and the ramifications of, these changes, and in the process will become familiar with broader theoretical issues concerning the legacy of Western art and the role of visual culture in a range of 19th- and early 20th-century societies.

- Craft versus fine art
- Primitivism and colonisation
- The aesthetics of abstraction
- Utopian visions: art as social critique
- The photographic medium as art
