Unit description

Provides students with foundational knowledges in active reading and writing practices and prepares them for a writing life based on creativity, critical interpretation and writing skills. Students will begin a portfolio of creative work and engage in the giving and receiving of critical feedback integral to their writing practice.

Topic 1: The art of creative-writing practice
Topic 2: Writers, readers, responding to texts
Topic 3: Narrative structure: voice and point of view
Topic 4: Narrative structure: plot and time, the short story
Topic 5: Building character
Topic 6: Place and setting: descriptive writing
Topic 7: Creative nonfiction
Topic 8: Dramatic writing and dialogue
Topic 9: Poetry
Topic 10: Writing and rewriting: Workshopping the final draft
Topic 11: Writing in the public world: Publishing
