    To meet the accreditation standards of these courses, all students are required to meet participation requirements to pass the unit. A record of attendance will be kept. Session 2, 2021: Gold Coast students must attend and participate in compulsory weekly workshops. Online students must attend and participate in compulsory weekly online workshops. Session 3, 2021: Online students must attend and participate in a mandatory online residential from Friday 3th - Sunday 5th December. 9:00am - 12:00pm, 1:00pm - 4:00pm each day

Unit description

Overviews the use of counselling skills within human services work within an Australian context, and shows how research, personal self-awareness and skill development contribute to the development of the therapeutic relationship.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss the use of counselling techniques in human services practice, addressing questions of ethical practice

describe basic principles of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural and humanistic-existential theories

successfully demonstrate beginning counselling skills

reflect upon and evaluate the importance of self-awareness, their own values and beginning skill development.
