Unit description

Introduces students to issues and challenges experienced by people with a disability from a personal, social and professional perspective.   Examines theories of disability including social and medical models.  Discusses and evaluates theoretical frameworks used within community settings; and the benefits and challenges of legislation and policy for good practice.

Topic1: Understanding Disability

  • Historical context
  • Definitions of disability
  • The different types of disability
  • Context of disability from an individual, social and professional perspective
  • Issues and barriers faced by people who have a disability

Topic 2: From Theory to Practice

  • Theories of disablement: social and medical models
  • Ethics, risk assessment and  paternalistic practice
  • Social inclusion
  • Social justice issues

Topic 3: Disability Politics

  • Disability legislation and policy
  • Implications of legislation and policy on practice
  • Good practice: what is it and who decides?
