Unit description

This unit provides students with the core competencies in nursing care of avian, native, wildlife, exotic, zoo and large animal species. Students will apply their animal handling skills and become competent in the assessment of these animals. They will be able to perform diagnostic procedures and work as part of the veterinary health care team in the treatment and management of these species in veterinary practice. The unit includes instruction in wildlife rehabilitation and release.

Module 1. General principles of avian, native, wildlife, exotic, and zoo animal husbandry
 
Module 2. Nursing care of avian, native, wildlife, exotic, and zoo animals 1
 
Module 3. Nursing care of avian, native, wildlife, exotic, and zoo animals 2
 
Module 4. Wildlife rehabilitation and release
 
Module 5. Nursing care of large animal species 1
 
Module 6. Nursing care of large animal species 2

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate competency in handling, assessing, and performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in avian, native, wildlife, exotic, zoo, and large animal veterinary species

apply well-developed knowledge to communicate the principles of zoo animal husbandry, nutrition and welfare

analyse and discuss the ethical considerations in wildlife rehabilitation and release

demonstrate proficiently and cultural competency in working as part of a wildlife clinical care team while engaging in reflective practice.
