Unit description

This unit provides students with the knowledge and technical skills to work as part of the veterinary health care team and apply the safe use of pharmaceuticals in veterinary practice. Students will apply knowledge of the major drug classes used in veterinary medicine and the regulations associated with their supply, use, and storage.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of therapeutics legislation and drug scheduling to discuss the limitations of access, use, and storage of veterinary drugs and poisons

apply specialised knowledge of the major veterinary drugs and discuss how they can promote animal health, wellbeing and productivity when applied in a treatment regime

demonstrate proficiently in communicating key concepts in prescribing veterinary medicines and drug withholding periods.

integrate and communicate across a range of cultural contexts the importance of antimicrobial and anthelmintic resistance while engaging in reflective practice.
