Unit description

This unit provides students with the essential knowledge and skills to work as part of the health care team in the assessment of emergencies, application of first aid, and management critical care patients in hospital. Students will refine their clinical skills in the planning, execution, and interpretation of medical procedures. They will also gain an understanding of veterinary emergency and critical care medicine and the importance of end of life care in the veterinary context.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

integrate animal assessment and veterinary medical knowledge to proficiently triage emergency patients across a range of veterinary species

demonstrate proficiency in planning and performing emergency first aid across a range of veterinary species

demonstrate proficiency in the assessment, monitoring, and management of hospitalised critical care patient

demonstrate proficiency in assessing factors impacting on end of life decisions and care, and communicating these to a range of clients while engaging in reflective practice.
