    Students must have completed all units in Year 1 AND VTWIL-1 (4 weeks) before enrolling in this unit. Attendance Requirements - Due to the requirements for experiential learning as well as compliance with professional accreditation standards, attendance at tutorials, workshops, practicals and field trips is expected. Some learning experiences will be hybrid, but daily attendance at the Lismore campus will be typically expected. Students must attempt all assessments as per the Assessment Teaching and Learning Policy.

Unit description

This unit provides students with essential skills in laboratory techniques, diagnostic testing, and imaging in veterinary practice. Students will develop their technical skills across a range of diagnostic tests and equipment.  Students will also be introduced to the principles of imaging  and radiation safety. 

Unit content

  1. General principles of diagnostic testing and laboratory techniques; sample collection, preservation, and transportation 
  2. Pathology: interpretation of results/data recording.
  3. Clinical laboratory techniques
  4. General principles of diagnostic imaging and radiation safety
  5. Patient preparation, restraint, and positioning for diagnostic imaging
  6. Complementary diagnostic imaging modalities.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply well-developed knowledge to plan and perform a range of diagnostic techniques and tests commonly encountered in veterinary practice, including collection, storage , and transport requirements

demonstrate proficiency in interpreting diagnostic test results and communicate findings across a range of cultural contexts while engaging in reflective practice

apply the legislation and protocols of diagnostic imaging and radiation safety to safely prepare, restrain, and position patients in veterinary practice

demonstrate and communicate the methodology of setting x-ray exposure factors along with the processes required in achieving diagnostic quality images.
