Unit description

This unit provides students with essential skills in laboratory techniques, diagnostic testing, and imaging in veterinary practice. Students will develop their technical skills across a range of diagnostic tests and equipment.  Students will also be introduced to the principles of imaging  and radiation safety. 

Unit content

Module 1. General principles of diagnostic testing and laboratory techniques; sample collection, preservation, and transportation
 
Module 2. Pathology: interpretation of results/data recording
 
Module 3.  Laboratory techniques 1: Laboratory equipment/haematology
 
Module 4. Laboratory techniques 2: Cytology/urinalysis/faecal analysis
 
Module 5. General principles of diagnostic imaging and radiation safety
 
Module 6. Patient preparation, restraint, and positioning for diagnostic imaging

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply well-developed knowledge to plan and perform a range of diagnostic techniques and tests commonly encountered in veterinary practice, including collection, storage , and transport requirements

demonstrate proficiency in interpreting diagnostic test results and communicate findings across a range of cultural contexts while engaging in reflective practice

apply the legislation and protocols of diagnostic imaging and radiation safety to safely prepare, restrain, and position patients in veterinary practice

demonstrate and communicate the methodology of setting x-ray exposure factors along with the processes required in achieving diagnostic quality images.
