    1. This unit requires travel to off-campus locations. Check the Blackboard site for travel details, as some sites require additional travel time. Scheduled class times may appear longer as they include travel time. 2. To pass the unit, students must submit and satisfy requirements for all assessment tasks. 3. Attendance and participation are strongly linked to student success and retention. Students are encouraged to attend all classes and engagement activities to support learning, progression, and success as a veterinarian. For units with practicals and other learning activities that directly relate to developing AVBC day one competencies that are required for veterinary accreditation, attendance is required. Specific attendance requirements will be communicated within the unit.

Unit description

This module aims to introduce students to veterinary clinical practice through early, supported integration of foundational clinical skills, reasoning, and professional practice across species. VMED1001 focuses on developing students’ ability to undertake structured clinical examinations, perform basic diagnostic sampling, administer medications, and use introductory diagnostic and surgical equipment within authentic clinical scenarios. Learning activities emphasise the application of clinical knowledge rather than isolated skill acquisition, supporting students to understand how individual skills contribute to whole-patient assessment and decision-making in veterinary practice. As an integration unit, the module aims to bring together communication, teamwork, clinical reasoning, and practical skills through introductory case-based learning and hands-on activities. Content is deliberately sequenced to align with concurrent and prior learning in anatomy, physiology, animal handling, and professional studies, supporting spiral and vertical development of competence from novice to advanced beginner.

  2. Systematic Clinical examination, history taking, intro diagnostic sampling for companion animals focusing on Canine and Feline, pocket pets
  3. Systematic Clinical examination, history taking, intro to diagnostic sampling for Equines and Ruminants
  4. Systematic Clinical examination history taking, intro to diagnostic sampling focusing on Avian and Wildlife
  5. Introduction to surgical instrumentation, basics of surgical technique and surgical skill development, gloving and gowning
  6. Clinical cases - integration - Gastro-intestinal presentations

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe and demonstrate biosafety, hygiene, sharps handling and record keeping to perform introductory clinical procedures, administration of medications and drug dose calculations

perform a structured clinical examination demonstrating foundational clinical skills (including handling, restraint, and physiological assessments), introductory diagnostic sampling and use of diagnostic and laboratory equipment

identify type and purpose of surgical instruments and demonstrate safe handling and basic fundamental surgical techniques

apply and reflect on foundational clinical knowledge in introductory case scenarios demonstrating effective teamwork, respectful communication, biosecurity awareness, and conflict-management skills within a veterinary practice context.
