Unit description

This unit further develops essential professional skills required for veterinary clinicians. Students will learn the fundamental principles of critical thinking, problem solving, evidence-based practice, ethics and reflective practice for lifelong learning. These principles will be applied in practical sessions that introduce students to problems seen in veterinary practice .

Module 1. Principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine
 
Module 2. Critical appraisal of scientific literature & formulating research questions
 
Module 3. Professional conduct and ethics
 
Module 4. Cultural competencies in veterinary practice - Working in indigenous communities
 
Module 5. Cultural competencies in veterinary practice - Working with charities
 
Module 6. Practical application of professional skills

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply evidence-based veterinary medicine principles to formulate a research question and conduct a critical appraisal of the scientific literature to inform clinical decision making

generate innovative solutions to clinical based scenarios through considering multiple perspectives, critical analysis, and translation of evidence to practice

apply the principles of ethical decision making, professional conduct, and cultural awareness to navigate a range of complex ethical dilemmas in veterinary practice

demonstrate reflective practice to identify personal learning needs and undertake independent study.
