Unit description

This unit provides foundational knowledge of animal reproduction, genetics and breeding with application to veterinary contexts. Students will study appropriate reproduction and selection protocols across a range of common domestic species. This will provide them with the ability to identify and intervene on common genetic disorders, and to design breeding plans for common veterinary species. Students will also participate in community engaged learning to support knowledge and skill development.

Module 1. General principles of animal reproduction, genetics & selection
 
Module 2. Reproductive physiology and pharmacology of common domestic species
 
Module 3. Applied companion animal reproduction, genetics and breeding
 
Module 4. Applied equine reproduction, genetics and breeding
 
Module 5. Applied ruminant reproduction, genetics and breeding
 
Module 6. Applied pig/poultry/intensive production and other species reproduction, genetics and breeding

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of reproductive physiology and pharmacology to implement breeding programs in common domestic species

apply knowledge of reproduction protocols and procedures to optimize breeding outcomes and genetic improvement for different species encountered in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of diagnostics and genetic technology to design treatment and disease control protocols in a veterinary clinical setting

demonstrate reflective practice in applying knowledge of veterinary genetics and breeding to the veterinary clinical setting.
