Unit description

This unit aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the principles of disease caused by parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi commonly encountered in veterinary practice. Students will develop knowledge and skills for practical techniques used in identification of these pathogens in animals, and apply this knowledge in the control of disease of common preventable microbial diseases of veterinary species.

Module 1. General principles of microbiology
 
Module 2. Practical approaches for diagnosis of common causes of disease by parasites, bacteria, viruses & fungi        
 
Module 3.Preventative health programs: A microbiological perspective
 
Module 4. Applied microbiology: Companion animals and exotics
 
Module 5. Applied microbiology: Equine
 
Module 6. Applied microbiology: Ruminants & production species

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of the structure, classification, and life cycles of parasites significant to veterinary practice

discuss the importance of inherent and environmental factors affecting bacteria, fungi, and viruses as the underlying basis of common diseases seen in veterinary practice

demonstrate competency in applying techniques used for obtaining clinical specimens from animals and methods employed for identifying bacteria, fungi, and viruses in a diagnostic setting

design preventative health programs for common domestic species through reflective practice and application of knowledge of common microbial pathogens and specific interventions.
