Unit description

This unit develops awareness of the foundation principles of professionalism, communication, cultural perspectives, critical thinking, self assessment, and reflection in the context of veterinary practice. Students will be supported to develop personal and professional skills, with the opportunity to address problems or issues in common veterinary scenarios, from a range of perspectives.

Unit content

  1. Communication and language in Veterinary Science
  2. Veterinary teams in clinical practice and the role of personal and professional identity
  3. Principles of critical thinking and clinical reasoning in veterinary practice
  4. Evidence based veterinary medicine and evidence-based decision making
  5. Cultural competency in veterinary practice — global perspectives and Indigenous perspectives
  6. Approaches to learning and self-assessment.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply the general principles, terminology, equipment, and team roles that form the foundation of veterinary practice

apply a range of effective communication strategies for veterinary teamwork while utilising veterinary medical terminology accurately and appropriately

demonstrate the ability to collect, review and collate information gathered in a veterinary setting

practice critical thinking and reflective practice to address issues or problems in common veterinary scenarios whilst considering a diverse range of cultural or ethical perspectives.
