Unit description

This unit explores multimodal communication and meaning-making for children in early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings. Pedagogical knowledge for supporting children’s language development through literature is investigated. The unit focuses on engaging children’s learning including movement, sound, gesture, digital media, children’s picture books, poetry, storytelling, mark-making, as essential to language development and creativity. Key concepts include how languages shape relational pedagogies, the image of the child, play-based environments as third teachers, and documentation practices, as seen in the Reggio Emilia educational approach and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s education.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply pedagogies that foreground children’s voices through documentation, listening, and multimodal expression

critically analyse theories of children’s language acquisition and evaluate how children’s literature supports communication and literacy development in early learning contexts

analyse and apply strategies to promote children’s language and literacy development including children who have English as an additional language

design play-based learning experiences that honour children’s languages including the 100 languages of children and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s culture
