Unit description

This unit supports pre-service teachers to engage in professional experience within preschool educational and care settings. Regulatory, pedagogical and professional expectations that shape high-quality programs for children aged three to five are explored through close engagement with policy, theory and practice. The unit includes theoretical perspectives and practical strategies to support pre-schoolers’ learning in relation to development, interests, and capabilities. Pre-service teachers will explore contemporary theories of learning and development relevant to preschool-aged children, and apply these to design pedagogies that honour children’s strengths, identities and capabilities. Honouring children's strengths and interests prepares children for the transition to formal schooling. This knowledge provides a foundation for making informed, ethical and professional decisions in practice where students articulate a professional philosophy that synthesises their values, beliefs and understandings about teaching preschool-aged children.

Module 1: Quality Standards and Code of Conduct for Working Ethically with Children.
 
Module 2: Theoretical and Practical Perspectives of Pedagogy for Preschoolers’ Learning.
 
Module 3: Understanding Pre-School Learning as Integrated, Holistic and Interconnected to Support Development.
 
Module 4: The Planning Cycle for The Learning and Development of Pre-School Aged Children.
 
Module 5: Teaching Strategies and Environments that Support Learning.
 
Module 6: Bringing It All Together: Developing Your Professional Identity and Ethical Practice as An Early Childhood Teacher.

Learning outcomes

critically analyse and apply theoretical, developmental and practical perspectives of pedagogy for pre-schoolers’ learning by developing and implementing the planning cycle

critically reflect upon your teaching philosophy with a focus on inclusion, diversity and supporting children’s strengths and capabilities

make sound professional judgement on ethical practices regarding values, beliefs and understanding about teaching young children
