Unit description

Provides students with the opportunity to build on knowledge and skills developed in Professional Experience I and II through a further classroom teaching experience. This unit further develops students' knowledge and skills for collecting and interpreting data as evidence to inform practice; developing successful summative assessment tasks; providing feedback to students; and engaging in moderation practice to ensure accurate judgments and feedback. Students will collect information to inform the development of an authentic assessment item that will further develop their skills for teaching as they make the transition to the profession.

  • Applying formative and summative assessment to the classroom

Topic 2: Planning and Teaching

  • Using data to inform planning and teaching

  • Developing units of work and appropriate assessment

Topic 3: Feedback and Making Judgments

  • Effective feedback
  • Feedback for students, parents and carers

Topic 4: Moderation and Standards

  • Moderation in teams and making judgments against criteria
  • Moderation practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

work effectively in a learning community that seeks to meet the specific learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds and across a wide range of abilities; practise strategies of providing feedback to students about their learning and performance against the standards

consider data collection and evaluation to inform planning for teaching; critically review teaching and students' learning as a way to improve student outcomes

analyse and evaluate the range of contexts for teaching, considering the needs of students in the preparation of learning sequences and assessment strategies

reflect critically and creatively on teaching practices, drawing on classroom experiences of student learning

articulate knowledgeably the importance of polices and guidelines on child protection, health and safety, and professional codes of conduct

create a safe and supportive learning environment having regard to child protection legislation, workplace health and safety, and duty of care

apply competently the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers.
