Unit description

This unit examines pedagogical approaches considered ‘alternative’ in early childhood education and care (ECEC), that are grounded in theory and practice. With a focus on play-based and nature-based pedagogies, the unit focuses on how to apply alternative contexts to engage children’s learning.

Unit content

Module 1: The history of alternative pedagogies. 

Module 2: Alternative pedagogies in Early Childhood, including Montessori, Waldorf and Emilio Reggia.  

Module 3: Pedagogies of play and discovery.

Module 4: Nature Pedagogy: Theory and Background. 

Module 5: Nature Pedagogy: In Action. 

Module 6: Slow Pedagogy.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse and compare key principles of diverse pedagogical approaches in early childhood education and care, drawing on relevant theoretical and practical pedagogical perspectives

design engaging and collaborative learning environments that foster children’s curiosity, foundational skills, and holistic development from birth to five years

critically reflect on the role that outdoor, nature-based environments play in pedagogical approaches to early childhood education (locally, nationally and internationally)

critically analyse the role of the educator in creating safe, inclusive and responsive teaching and learning environments in nature-based contexts
