    Students MUST enrol prior to Week 1. This unit provides intensive workshops which begin on day 1 of teaching and assessment that are aligned with the Early Childhood Placement.

Unit description

Develops a deep understanding of the education and care of pre-schoolers within Australia and globally. A focus on preschool contexts, including the quality and regulatory environments. The unit includes theoretical perspectives and practical strategies to support pre-schoolers’ learning in relation to development, interests, and capabilities. Emphasis is given to the provision of the quality physical and human environment to support pre-schoolers’ competency and capability. Consideration is given to the diversity of contexts, inclusion and social justice for pre-schoolers within Australian contexts. 

Unit content

Module 1: Contexts for pre-school education within Australia and across the world, including quality and regulatory environments. 
 
Module 2: Theoretical and practical perspectives of pedagogy for preschoolers’ learning. 
 
Module 3: Quality of early childhood education and care for preschool.
 
Module 4: Observing, documenting and assessing pre-schoolers learning. 
 
Module 5: Teaching strategies to support diversity and inclusion for preschoolers’ learning. 
 
Module 6: Bringing it all together: Developing a professional philosophy to support teaching practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse the Australian and global contexts of preschool educational contexts in terms of provision of quality, management and the regulatory environment

understand and apply theoretical and practical perspectives of pedagogy for pre-schoolers’ learning.

develop a professional philosophy to teach preschooler with a focus on diversity, inclusion and supporting children’s pro-social competencies

demonstrate the ability to observe, document and assess in an early childhood educational program for preschoolers
