Unit description

This unit explores how historical contexts and perspectives of children can be seen in current curriculum, policy and perspectives in the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector. Students will situate current ECEC within broader historical contexts and settings. Students will examine global and local contexts of early childhood education and critically engage with the social, political and economic factors of the past that influence and shape practice.

Module 1: Philosophies of early childhood education.

Module 2: Global movements and comparative histories.

Module 3: Local curriculum and policy development.

Module 4: First Nations perspectives of early learning.

Module 5: Feminist perspectives of early childhood education and care.

Module 6: Contemporary reflections on historical movements.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. analyse key historical philosophies and figures that have shaped early childhood education, including their influence on contemporary pedagogical practices

evaluate the impact of social, cultural, and political contexts on the development of early childhood education systems across different time periods and regions

compare diverse approaches to early childhood education, including Indigenous knowledge systems and international models, to understand their historical significance and ongoing relevance

reflect on the historical evolution of early childhood education in Australia, considering policy developments, curriculum changes, and advocacy movements
