Unit description

This unit focuses on mathematical and scientific thinking as embedded in everyday life for children, underpinning even their earliest of experiences. It is through these experiences that young children have the opportunity to build foundational understandings and dispositions that they will continue to build on throughout their lives. This unit provides students with the opportunities to recognise mathematics and science in children’s play-based learning and learn to how to extend thinking through the planning cycle. Students will also have the opportunity to build confidence in using digital technology as a tool to support and extend thinking and learning.

Module 1: What is Curriculum in Early Childhood Education and Care?

Module 2: Early Maths. 

Module 3: Early Science. 

Module 4: Digital Technology.  

Module 5: Sustainability and Environmental Education.

Module 6: STEM Thinking and Learning Within the EYLFv2.0.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

investigate the theoretical and pedagogical understanding of mathematical and scientific thinking for children

analyse and apply knowledge of mathematics, science and sustainability in environmental education to identify, interpret and extend children’s learning and development

investigate and articulate how digital technologies can be used to support, enrich and extend children’s thinking and learning

apply the principles, practices and learning outcomes of mathematics, science and technology that are embedded in the Early Years Curriculum Framework, to engage children’s learning and development
