Unit description

Provides students with an understanding of the key aspects of an early childhood educator's principles and practices in the EYLF (AGDE, 2022) as it relates to the National Quality Standards (ACECQA, 2020). The  principles and practices of the EYLF are critiqued as they apply to early childhood educators’ practice. The importance of flexible and sustainable learning environments for children’s learning and development is considered and analysed.

Unit content

Module 1: Welcome to the EYLF, the NQF and NQS.

Module 2: Developing relationships with children.

Module 3: Building partnerships with families and community.

Module 4: Collaborative relationships with colleagues to plan for children.

Module 5: Creating rich learning environments.

Module 6: Working holistically in an early childhood environment.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe and apply the key principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (AGDE, 2022)

understand and analyse the importance of relationships and how to build and foster them with children, families, staff and the community respecting the diversities of their histories and background

develop the knowledge and skills regarding setting up learning environments for children that are flexible and sustainable both indoors and outdoors

reflect upon, and critique the holistic approaches of principles and practices
