Unit description

Part 1 of 2 units comprising the second social work field placement. Engages students in 600 hours (across SWRK6005 and SWRK6006) of supervised social work practice, in a different human service organisation to which they completed the first social work field placement (SWRK5005-6). Develops professional skills, knowledge and values in line with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation. Emphasis is placed on the use of research to inform social work practice and policy change.

Unit content

  1. Analysing the agency and social policy context
  2. Forming, maintaining and ending ethical and professional relationships with clients, colleagues and others
  3. Communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders from diverse populations
  4. Understanding the role of social workers within the organisation
  5. Understanding the range of social work practice and application of theory within this setting
  6. Making effective use of critical reflection and professional supervision
  7. Understanding, developing and applying evidence based social work practice relevant to setting
  8. Identifying the potential for research to inform social work practice and policy change

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form and maintain professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation

demonstrate and critically reflect on effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders

analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation

articulate a professional practice framework, drawing on social work knowledge, that can be applied to a range of social work settings

engage in professional supervision to increase learning about social work practice.
