Unit description

This is the second of three Honours Thesis units which collectively provide students with an opportunity to engage in academic research in social work through the completion, under guidance, of a thesis.  In this unit, students will be supported to refine their thesis topic, complete a research proposal, and plan for the timely completion of their project.

Unit content

With guidance from an academic supervisor, students will cover the following topics during this unit:

  1. Formulating a research question
  2. Applying an appropriate methodology
  3. Writing a proposal
  4. Working with collaborators
  5. Gaining ethics approval
  6. Planning for data collection

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

synthesise literature and evidence to formulate a research question of relevance to social work

design a project that addresses a research question using appropriate methodology

plan the timely completion of a research project
