Unit description

Refines students' research capability, including the planning and design of a research project. Extends students' experience in the preparation, presentation and editing of a thesis for examination. This is the second of two units where students plan and manage a structured research project, culimating in the completion of a thesis.  

Unit content

1. Research project planning: reviewing and refining the workplan.

2. Methodological issues.

3. Data collection and data analysis.

4. Integrating literature and findings.

5. Drafting for thesis and publication.

6. Preparation, presentation and editing of thesis text for examination.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate autonomy in one's learning and responsibility in one's practice as a researcher

apply theoretical knowledge to the interpretation of substantial research findings

develop and sustain a substantial argument over the length of the thesis

demonstrate written, verbal, and other applicable communication skills to present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge
