    International onshore students must enrol in the internal offering of this unit. This placement should be completed at the end of your degree. This unit contains Work Integrated Learning (WIL) that requires students to meet mandatory fit to practice obligations prior to attending. Failure to comply by the fit to practice deadline will result in the cancellation of your WIL and you will not be permitted to continue in this unit. Unit description

Comprises the final social work placement. Engages students in 500 hours of supervised social work practice in a human service organisation. Students have access to regular supervision in accordance with AASW requirements. Develops professional skills, knowledge and values based on the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other course work units in the course to practice in a real organisation.

Unit content

  • Forming, maintaining and ending professional and ethical relationships with clients, colleagues, supervisors and others.
  • Engaging and communicating effectively with a range of stakeholders from diverse populations.
  • Understanding the social work role and contributing effectively to teams and groups within the workplace.
  • Engaging in critical self-reflection and making effective use of supervision
  • Presenting to colleagues and other professionals.
  • Evaluating own practice and Identifying future learning needs by gaining feedback from clients, colleagues, supervisors and community members.
  • Analyse the role of social work and use research to inform social work practice and policy change.
  • Understanding social work and leadership roles within human service organisations and the health and community service sector.
  • Developing a professional social work identity and practice framework that draws on a wide range of social work knowledge.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors in a human service organisation at the level of a beginning practitioner

demonstrate and critically reflect on effective engagement, communication, practice skills, and intervention approaches with clients, colleagues, supervisors and other key stakeholders

analyse the organisation, its location within wider social systems and its relationship with other organisations, such as auspicing bodies and funding agencies and implications for the role of social work and delivery of social work services to clients

use and critically reflect on social work knowledge, including theoretical and research knowledge, to inform social work identity, practice and policy change, and draw on this to develop a practice framework and identify future learning needs
