Unit description

Comprises the first social work placement. Engages students in 500 hours of supervised social work practice in a human service organisation. Develops professional skills, knowledge and values based on the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation. Students experience regular supervision of their practice in accordance with AASW requirements.

  3. Understanding social work practice and using social work knowledge within a human service organisation
  4. Understanding the role of social work in an agency context
  5. Engaging in multidisciplinary practice contexts
  6. Effectively using professional supervision
  7. Communicating effectively with clients, colleagues and stakeholders
  8. Evaluating one's own practice using critical reflection and responding to feedback
  9. Applying social work knowledge to real world situations

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors in a human service organisation

demonstrate and critically reflect on effective engagement and communication with clients, colleagues, supervisors and other key stakeholders

analyse the role of social work and ways in which a social work services are provided within the organisation and practice field

analyse, apply and critically reflect on social work knowledge, including theoretical and research knowledge, to understand and inform social work practice in this agency and identify learning needs
