Unit description

Part 2 of two units comprising the first social work placement. Engages students in 500 hours (across Social Work Placement Ia and Ib) of supervised social work practice in a human service organisation. Develops professional skills, knowledge and values based on the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation.

Unit content

1. Forming, maintaining and ending professional relationships.

2. Communicating effectively with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.

3. Evaluating one's own practice using critical reflection and responding to feedback.

4. Applying social work knowledge to real world situations.

5. Developing a practice framework using social work knowledge.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form, maintain and end professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation.

demonstrate and critically reflect on effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders.

analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation.

use and critically reflect on social work knowledge, including theoretical and research knowledge, to inform social work practice in this agency and to inform policy change.

engage in professional supervision to increase learning about social work practice, and identify learning needs that extend beyond graduation
