Unit description

Part 1 of two units comprising the first social work placement. Engages students in 500 hours (across Social Work Placement Ia and Ib) of supervised social work practice in a human service organisation. This first 12  week unit culminates in a mid-placement assessment at week 12. Develops professional skills, knowledge and values based on the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) practice standards for social work. Transfers learning gained from other units in the course to practice in a real organisation. Students experience fortnightly supervision of their practice in accordance with AASW requirements.       

Unit content

1. Analysing the agency context.

2. Forming professional and ethical relationships with clients and colleagues and key stakeholders.

3. Understanding social work practice within a human service organisation.

4. Understanding the role of social work in an agency context.

5. Engaging in multidisciplinary practice contexts.

6. Effectively using professional supervision.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

form professional and ethical social work relationships with clients and colleagues in a human service organisation

demonstrate effective communication with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders

analyse the organisation, its location within wider social systems and its relationship with other organisations, such as auspicing bodies and funding agencies

analyse the ways in which a social work service is provided within the organisation

make use of professional supervision to increase their learning about social work practice
