Unit description

Focuses on developing a conceptual understanding of psychometric test construction and current and emerging forms of inferential testing. Reviews research methodology and data analysis concepts at an advanced level with a view to being incorporated into a research project. Psychometric test construction and traditional and modern approaches to inferential testing are discussed and performed.

Unit content

  • Construction of psychological measurements, including exploratory factor analysis
  • Multiple regression analysis, moderation, and mediation
  • Analysis of experimental designs
  • Review and critique of the logic behind null hypothesis testing
  • Alternatives to null hypothesis testing
  • Exploring data analysis strategies for a research project

Learning outcomes

apply theory and logic relevant to psychological measurement and advanced quantitative statistics to diverse research data

construct a psychometric test and test its structure, psychometric properties, and construct validity

evaluate, select and perform appropriate and complete statistical analyses to assess real-world research questions

report and interpret findings of analyses in accordance with approved conventions in psychology
