Unit description

Prepares students for speech pathology practice for working with adults who have swallowing difficulties as a consequence of a range of structural and/or functional impairments. The unit also develops knowledge and skills related to speech pathology practice of the management of swallowing and feeding disorders in non-complex paediatric cases.

Unit content

The unit content will be broadly divided into two modules:

  1. Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in children
  2. Speech pathology management of swallowing and feeding in adults

Both modules will address issues related to:

  • normal anatomy, physiology, and neurology associated with swallow function;
  • the impact of health conditions on swallowing and feeding;
  • signs, symptoms, risk factors, and prognoses associated with swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • speech pathology assessment of swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • speech pathology interventions for swallowing and feeding disorders;
  • application of principles related to client-centred practice, inter-professional practice, ethical practice, and evidence-based practice.
