Unit description

Prepares students for speech pathology practice when working with adults with acquired disorders of language and cognitive-communication associated with aetiologies such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia. The unit will promote holistic, ethical, and inter-professional management of clients by applying principles of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as embodied by the Living with Aphasia: Framework for Outcome Measurement.

Unit content

The unit will be broadly divided into two modules: Aphasia (Topics 1-8); and Cognitive-communication disorders (Topics 9-12).

Topic 1: Introduction to aphasia and its impact across the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and Living with Aphasia: Framework for Outcome Measurement (A-FROM)
Topic 2: Introduction to the cognitive-neuropsychology of language and its application to aphasia
Topic 3: Using cognitive-neuropsychology to inform assessment of language comprehension
Topic 4: Using cognitive-neuropsychology to inform assessment of language production
Topic 5: Eliciting and analysing language and conversation of people with aphasia
Topic 6: Exploring participation, the environment, and living with aphasia
Topic 7: Planning and implementing impairment-informed intervention with people with aphasia
Topic 8: Planning and implementing socially- and environmentally-informed interventions with people with aphasia
Topic 9: Cognition and its disruption in cognitive-communication disorders
Topic 10: Speech pathology management of communication following traumatic brain injury
Topic 11: Speech pathology management of communication in cases of right hemisphere disorder
Topic 12: Speech pathology management of communication in cases of dementia and progressive language loss
