Unit description

Facilitates application of knowledge, skills and attitudes to a live clinical practice experience within a supervised internal clinic; students providing actual clinical services for children with speech, language and pre-literacy problems. With guidance, students appraise children's communication, formulate and implement intervention plans, measure and document outcomes, involve caregivers and engage in reflective practice.

Lectures, Tutorials and Workshops: Theory and preclinical information on

  • Clinical education, learning, communicating and reflective practice
  • Protocol and responsibilities for clinical practicum
  • The International Classification of Functioning (ICF), Competency Based Occupational Standards (CBOS) 2011 and assessment of clinical skills
  • Considerations required for assessing clients
  • Report writing and documentation for clinical practice
  • Clinical reasoning, intervention planning and implementation
  • Communication and counselling
  • Delivery models, clinical practice and outcomes of intervention
  • Adult learning
  • Clinical supervision

Learning outcomes and graduate attributes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. 3 apply appropriate interpersonal communication skills and ethical behaviour with people in the clinical context at all times
4 produce effective intervention sessions that demonstrate use of evidence-based practice and International Classification of Functioning that lead to appropriate recommendations and referrals through professional reporting as summarized in the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (CBOS).
5 demonstrate an ability to be inquiring and reflective in practice and via a reflective journal and portfolio
