Unit description

Facilitates application of knowledge, skills and attitudes to a lived clinical practice experience within a supervised internal clinic; students providing actual clinical services for children with speech, language and pre-literacy problems. With guidance, students appraise children's communication, formulate and implement intervention plans, measure and document outcomes, involve caregivers and engage in reflective practice.

  8. Delivery models, clinical practice and outcomes of intervention

  11. Community education

Professional Clinic Placement (internal): Students are involved in a day of internal clinic each week in Session 2. Across the 12 days (0ne day per week) of this supervised practicum, students have the opportunity to assess a client's speech, language and communication over two sessions,. The student analyses the data, synthesises findings, writes up a diagnostic report and presents the findings to the client's family. Students have the opportunity to provide intervention for more than one client across the placement. Intervention plans for the client are developed and implemented and outcomes measured. Students work with clients in pairs and problem solve with groups of 6-8 students together with one clinical educator, who provides ongoing formative feedback, a midplacement and a final placement clinic assessment. Students have the opportunity to reflect on their performance and other aspects of the placement. Approximate processes across the 12 day placement are as follows:

5 with guidance, appraise responses to intervention measure outcomes, provide verbal and written feedback on results of intervention, make appropriate recommendations and referrals and use effective professional reporting (oral and written)
6 demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour and reflect and report accurately on performance as a student clinician
7 demonstrate an ability to be inquiring and reflective in practice and via a reflective journal and portfolio.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
