Unit description

Students develop knowledge and skills required to assess, diagnose and treat adults and children with voice disorders; and also to conduct audiometry appraisal relevant to speech pathology practice.  Students also learn to analyse and interpret audiological assessment information. Teaching and learning occurs through lectures, workshops and practical experiential tutorials.

Unit content

Content will be delivered across two modules:

  1. Voice and voice disorders in adults and children including: types, characteristics and underlying mechanisms of voice disorders; assessment of voice, including identifying perceptual features of different voice disorders;  intervention (e.g. goal setting and treatment strategies); and multidisciplinary teams managing voice disorders.
  2. Audiology for speech pathology practice including science of hearing, links between hearing impairment and communication disorders, practical involving an otoscopic examination, tympanometry and pure tone screening.
