Unit description

Introduces students to speech pathology assessment and intervention approaches and methods for children with speech sound disorders. Students engage with structured learning experiences built around subject based content, so as to develop knowledge and skills for applying: standardised tests; speech sampling; phonetic transcription and analysis of disordered speech; interpretation of this data and associated sources of information; principles of intervention, treatment planning and outcome measurement.

Unit content

  • Principles and practices in assessing, diagnosing, treating and measuring and reporting outcomes for child speech sound disorders in relation to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY).
  • Nature, types and classification of speech sound disorders (e.g. articulation, phonological, childhood apraxia of speech), incidence, prevalence, risk and protective factors
  • Standardised and non-standardised assessments for child speech
  • Phonetic, phonological and motor intervention approaches for child speech
  • Phases of treatment (e.g. establishment, stabilisation, generalisation)
  • Service delivery models (e.g. individual versus group)

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe risk factors associated with children's speech sound disorders and implications for speech pathology assessment, intervention and outcomes

assess, analyse, interpret, and differentially diagnose children's speech sound disorders

identify and describe different speech pathology intervention options for children with speech sound disorder.
