Unit description

Develops a foundational knowledge of the principles of assessment and intervention planning in speech pathology.  Students are provided with an opportunity to acquire, practise and demonstrate foundational speech pathology skills that underpin clinical practice.  Practise in tutorial sessions and simulated rehearsal prepares students to carry out foundational assessment and intervention skills ensuring a focus on evidence-based practice and optimisation of client outcomes.

Unit content

  1. Person and family centred practice, and culturally responsive care in speech pathology 
  2. Assessment of communication and swallowing for an individual and/or community
  3. Analysis and  interpretation and diagnosis of communication and swallowing at individual and service levels
  4. Ways of reporting information about communication and swallowing to meet the needs of the individual and/or community
  5. Intervention planning for communication and swallowing disorders to meet the needs of the individual and/or community
  6. The process of evaluating response to communication and swallowing management at individual and service levels

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe the process of assessment, analysis and diagnosis of communication and swallowing to meet the needs of the individual and/or community

explain the process of reporting and planning at an individual and/or service response level regarding communication and swallowing

reflect on the process of intervention and evaluation for communication and swallowing to meet the needs of the individual and/or community

explain how cultural responsiveness and person and family-centred factors impacts speech pathology practice
