Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe and transcribe speech sounds using phonetic terminology and the International Phonetic Alphabet

analyse and describe phonological aspects of syllable structure, word shape and speech sounds

perform morphological analyses and description of any given English word including irregular morphemes, tense and aspect

analyse and classify English words by identifying and providing evidence for the word class of each word in any given sentence

analyse and describe phrase, clause and sentence formation in English

identify and explain the key features of discourse and pragmatics

reflect on the application of phonetic and linguistic knowledge in speech pathology practice and on approaches to diversity in speech and language
