Unit description

Provides students with opportunities to critically engage with and explore a number of key contemporary issues confronting tourism and hospitality industries. The unit assists students understand the basis of issues and controversies, their often contested nature and ethical implications, as well as the various scales at which issues can operate.

Unit content

The dynamic nature of this unit requires students to develop and create curriculum though research, consultation with industry specialists, workshops, seminars and symposium participation. As such, no fixed weekly topics are set; however, activities based on the following will be used to construct content for the study period:

Module 1 Tourism and hospitality theoretical frameworks
Mapping out frameworks for critical understanding of tourism and hospitality issues, including the value of tourism and hospitality models; ethics, sustainability and change. - Topic 1 Introduction - Topic 2 Studying tourism, basic and beyond

Module 2 Contemporary tourism and hospitality issues analysis
Students undertake an in-depth analysis of an area of interest in contemporary tourism and relate the material to wider industrial, socio-cultural and environmental issues.

Module 3 Viewpoint
 An academic critique of the student area of interest. In addition to the two topics above, the Study Guide contains the following topics (not in any sequential order):

  • Environments of tourism and tourism Industries
  • Sustainable tourism and ecotourism
  • Socio-cultural aspects of tourism
  • Authenticity, tourism and tourism industries
  • Attractions and attraction theory
  • Tourism and political structure.

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit.
